A multitude of players have signed for Swindon Town but have not progressed to the first team.

This database - which was developed by fellow historian ALAN HARDING will hopefully list some 2,000 names of all those who have played at reserve team level for the club or as trialists for the first team. Thanks to MIKE SKINNER for providing many previously missing first names.

Peter made just two Combination appearances while at the County Ground, prior to his loan being terminated ten days early.

Within a few weeks of starting his apprenticeship, Nev opened the season in the Combination side. But he would struggle to reach double figures in appearances and after featuring in the opening three Midland Youth League fixtures of 1975/76 his contract was cancelled on 11 October.

After netting five goals in just nine Hellenic League games in 1969/70, Paul was given a couple of Combination run-outs in April 1971.

SWINDON TOWN (sb 16 Dec 1969 app Apr 1971 pro 19 Nov 1973) -
Bath City (cs 1976) - Yeovil Town (Jul 1979)

Glyn made his reserve debut shortly before the end of 1971/72 and became a regular in the side from October 1973, eventually totalling almost 100 appearances. Now a paramedic with the South Western Ambulance Service.

A left-winger, Clive made his reserve team debut in March 1974, going on to make almost 60 appearances.

Kenny came up through the ranks after joining Town aged 14, making his reserves debut in a 1-1 draw at West Ham in March 1974. He could not break into Danny Williams first team squad after signing a pro contract - but went on to make 19 League appearances for Newport, either side of his 30th birthday.

A 6'3" defender at just 17, Allan helped Town to reach the F A Youth Cup quarter-finals in 1972/73. He made 16 Combination appearances.


HILL Malcolm C D

Malcolm made his Midland Youth League debut in November 1970 and a year later had his only outing in the Combination - a 2-1 win at Arsenal ! He continued in full-time education in preference to an apprenticeship before suffering a serious knee injury at 21.

Mick was hastily 'borrowed' for Town's Anglo-Italian Cup adventure following Peter Downsborough's injury in a friendly at Yeovil a few days after the opening fixture. Roy Jones played in the remaining four games while Mick looked on from the bench. Three years later, Les Allen wanted to sign him but he failed a medical on one of his knees. Mick went on to play more than 300 games !

Hungerford Town

Signed at 14, Chris failed to show his early potential and had made just a couple of Combination appearances before being released in May 1972.


NEWMAN Steve (Steven) J G 
Born : Swindon 11 November 1955  
PLAYING CAREER
SWINDON TOWN (sb 17 Jun 1969 app 24 Apr 1971 pro 15 Nov 1973)

Promoted to the reserve side for the final two games of 1971/72, Steve starred in the Youth Cup side which reached the quarter-finals of the F.A.Youth Cup in the following season.


ROSE John William F 
Born : Witney, Oxon. 1 February 1952 Died : Witney 13 August 1988, aged 36
PLAYING CAREER
Carterton Town (sb 1966) - SWINDON TOWN (cs 1971) - Burnham Town (cs 1973)

John was top scorer for Town's Hellenic League side in both his seasons at the County Ground - 14 in the first and 15 in the second. His premature passing followed a long battle with cancer.

Steve first broke into the reserve side in September 1971. By 1973/74, he was a regular at left-back, before ending his Town career out on loan at Twerton.

After impressing on trial in a 1-0 Combination win at Cardiff, Peter went on to make sixty appearances across two seasons - the second of which frequently saw him playing behind younger brother Dave. But Peter was released on a free transfer in May 1973.


TURNER Gary G M

Gary played in the side which won the Midland Youth championship in 1973, but made only half a dozen Combination appearances before being released in 1974.


WALKEY Steve (Stephen) M 
Born : Frome, Somerset 20 October 1955

Trowbridge Town - Frome Town

Steve was a member of the side that lifted the Midland Youth title in 1973 - when he scored nine goals in all competitions. Given a free transfer in April 1974, he was playing for his home town club ten years later.

SWINDON TOWN (sb 22 Mar 1970 pro 15 May 1973) - Hungerford Town

Andy made 40 Combination appearances after being promoted to the pro ranks. The father of striker Alan Young, Andy left the club in 1975.
